The newly elected President of the General National Congress met with the Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Tarek Mitri on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the relationship between Libya and the United Nations.
Nouri Ali Busahmin expressed the GNC’s enthusiasm for working with the UN’s organisations in different areas, particularly in the field of human rights, adding injustice should be inflicted on the Libyan people by others.
Busahmin spoke in religious terms, saying “God had chosen us and we must respect others and show commitment to that deed.”
“Firstly and lastly, we must stand by the people of Libya for the values of freedom and justice, and reject injustice and abuse”, Mitri said. He continued to talk of the UN’s readiness offer advice and technical assistance to the new President, the General National Congress and the Government to support the building of the State’s legitimate institutions and the democratic transition according to the Libyan national priorities.
“The former regime left institutions shattered and close to rubble across four decade. We know the difficulties you face in rebuilding, and we will try to provide the support you ask from us. We understand Libya’s concerns and we wish success to the Libyan people.”
Busahmin thanked his UN counterpart for sharing optimism on Libya’s future. He recalled his own experiences of the Gaddafi regime, speaking of executions of students, writers, intellectuals and elders in the halls of the University of Benghazi, and in the squares throughout Libya.
He added: “This legacy of injustice will not force us to practice injstice…some individual cases do not mean we ignore any violations.”
Mitri added that the UN are “ready to provide all possible support” expressing their keenness for a national dialogue.
“We are in the process of finalizing preparations for the founding Committee elections for the Constitution”, Busahmin said, ending an optimistic meet.
