Tripoli, 18 May 2013:
Brega Petroleum Marketing Company (BMC)  has issued an urgent warning on its website, that unsafe gas cylinders imported illegally, are in circulation. The large-size cylinders, intended for home use, appear similar to those certified by Brega Marketing.
The cylinders, described as “ticking time bombs”, do not comply with Brega’s safety standards and have been unlawfully imported by traders, who, says BMC are looking to make a “quick profit and line their pockets” without considering the “risks posed to citizens”.
The web post blames lax controls at ports, poor performance from the Ministry of Interior, and a general absence of state institutions, for the proliferation of a sizeable quantity of these gas bottles in the market.
Brega plans on removing all dangerous cylinders and destroying them. Compensation, it says, will not be given, as their destruction is a measure to ensure public safety.
The statement does not advise consumers how to detect the defective cylinders.
