Renewed turmoil In Libya is threatening to thrust the North African nation back into conflict and instability according to the United Nations envoy to the country.
Libya has been undergoing a democratic transition since the toppling in 2011 of former leader Muammar al-Qadhafi.
But political tensions as well as what have been called "significant security developments", particularly in the eastern part of the country, have threatened stability.
Briefing the Security Council on Monday, Tarek Mitri, the head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), described the apprehension of the Libyan people.
"There is a continuing sense of concern, among the Libyan people regarding the prospect of a protracted conflict. The crisis which has dominated the political scene for the past few months poses a threat to their country’s political transition."
Mr Mitri said he had redoubled his efforts to urge all parties in Libya to resolve the political impasse through peaceful means.

And he added that resorting to the use of force would have "disastrous consequences for the country."
