Libya's General National Congress convened on Tuesday in its Tripoli headquarters where it voted – with the attendance of 94 of 182 members – to send Prosecutor-General Abdel-Qader Radwan into forced retirement while maintaining Busahmain as temporary commander of the regular army.
"Parliament's judicial affairs committee has called for the appointment of a new prosecutor-general as soon as possible," Hemeidan told Anadolu Agency.
He added that parliament had appointed Al-Sadik al-Sour, head of the prosecution's investigations department, to take up the post until a new prosecutor-general was chosen.
Hemeidan stressed that the decision to sack Radwan was not politically motivated.
"Radwan failed to keep up with rapid developments in Libya with serious investigations into national security cases," Hemeidan said.
He went on to attribute the decision to extend Busahmain's mandate as army chief to MPs' inability to convene regularly amid Libya's deteriorating security climate.
On Monday, the Libyan Constitutional Court dismissed as "unconstitutional" the interim assembly's recent selection of businessman Ahmed Maiteeq – who enjoys the support of parliament's Islamist bloc – as prime minister.
Fears of a possible Libyan civil war have mounted in recent weeks since renegade general Khalifa Haftar declared war on armed militias – some of which have been absorbed into the regular army – in the eastern city of Benghazi.
Recent fighting in the flashpoint city between militiamen and Hatar's forces has left scores dead from both sides.
