TRIPOLI:TBT News Desk- -International Criminal Court chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has called on the Libyan government to hand over the son of former leader Muammar Gaddafi to face trial in The Hague for for crimes against humanity.
Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, who was once considered hier to his slain father’s throne, appeared in a Tripoli court via video link in from the city of Zintan last month. He has been held in Zintan by a militia since he was captured in November 2011.
Reiterating a call by the UN Security Council, Bensouda called on Libya to comply with ICC orders. Last October, the Libyan government had given the ICC permission to try former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senoussi on the same charges.
Al-Senoussi, however, appealed to be put on trial in his home country Libya.
Following the toppling and killing of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi during the Arab Spring uprisings, the Libyan government has struggled to restore the rule of law to the country, which has been gripped by deadly clashes between rival militias.
