#Sahmain calls on security forces to recapture released criminals #libya

By Mohamed Najah.
Tripoli, 11 August 2013:
The president of the General National Congress, Nuri Abu Sahmain, has ordered security forces to track down and re-arrest the several thousand criminals released from prison by the Qaddafi regime at the start of the revolution.
According to the Facebook page of the Backup and Support Unit No. 42, Libya Shield forces have received a list of some 17,000 names, many of whom it said had been sentenced to life imprisonment while others had been condemned to death for their crimes.
Earlier reports put the number of criminals freed by Abdullah Senussi at 15,000.
It is widely believed that that the recent spate of crimes and attacks is largely the work of these criminals.
Meanwhile, a statement issued by the same unit says that it has seized 127 vehicles without license plates and where the names of the drivers did not match licensing records. It is believed the vehicles may have been stolen.
Cars and drivers are being held.
The unit has also reported that it has captured 273 Kalashnikov semi-automatic rifles and 81 pistols. Those in possession of the weapons are now being kept in custody but will be released once ballistics investigations show that the guns were not used in any attacks.  Those arrested will also be required to sign an undertaking not to carry weapons again, agreeing if they do so and are caught, to be sentenced to ten years in prison.
