Tripoli, 31 August 2013:
The Supreme Tuareg Council has demanded that Tamazight, the language spoken by themselves as well as by the Amazigh, be recognised in the constitution as one of Libya’s official languages.
At a meeting in Obari on Tuesday, the Council stressed that Tuareg aspirations and needs could not be ignored during Libya’s transitional phase. It added that it would continue to defend the civil rights of the Tuareg.
In a statemen, the Council called on the government to speed up registration for national identity numbers for all Tuareg families.
Members of the Council stressed their support for the Military Security Committee in its efforts to secure Fezzan. It said it supported the civil call which demands the establishment of security and stability within the South.
Meanwhile some Amazigh town councils, including Zuwara, have already started using Tamazight on official documents.
