Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has expressed his
concern over Libya posing a terrorist threat to North Africa, when
speaking at a press conference last week.
“The situation in Libya is a clear terrorist threat to neighbouring countries, including Algeria and the rest of the region, because of the large deployment and unattended weapons.”
Lavrov said in an interview to Khabar “Libyan weapons were behind the terrorist attack on the Tigantourine gas facility near In Amenas, Algeria,” calling for a “strict and full application of resolution 2017 UN Security Council proposed by Russia.”
The resolution aims to limit the spread of Libyan arms in order to stop terrorists gaining access to them, and also being smuggled into other countries.
Lavrov also expressed concern over the increasing coordination between various Al-Qaeda groups in the area, “which aim to thwart all attempts to restore peace in Syria, inciting ethnic and religious hatred, especially between Sunnis and Shiites.”
