The Philippines want security beefed up for thousands of expatriates working in Libya, following the thwarted abduction of three nurses.
The three Filipinos were abducted on Monday in Sebha by a Libyan taxi driver. Instead of taking them home, he drove them to the outskirts of town, but all three managed to escape unharmed.
Once a police report into the incident has been received, the Philippines ambassador to Libya, Oscar Orcine, will be urging the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs to improve security for Filipino expatriates, according to Philippines daily, Tempo.
The three nurses, shaken by their ordeal, have not yet returned to work. Instead they are reportedly going back to Tripoli, to rest amongst the Filipino community there.
There are some 2,000 expatriate Filipinos working in Libya, many of whom are nurses. Although the Philippines government issued a mandatory evacuation of Filipino workers in March 2011, many ignored this, choosing to stay in Libya and work at the country’s hospitals during the revolution.
