#Tawergha demands government support for return home #libya

Women and children from the town of Tawergha protested on Monday in front of the Tripoli Local Council’s headquarters, demanding their safe return home later this month.
Asking for protection upon their return from the General National Congress, Tawerghans have set the date of June 25th as their homecoming, regardless of protests in Misrata last month condemning their actions.
UNHCR’s figures claim 47,000 IDP were in Libya at the beginning of 2013, and aim to reduce the figure to 35,000 by the end of the year. Most of those are from Tawergha, with virtually none returning home after the revolution. According to Tawergha community leaders, about 18,000 people are in Benghazi, 13,000 in Tripoli, and 7,000 in and around Sabha.
“Successive governments in Tripoli and local authorities in Misrata have failed to stop the ongoing persecution of an entire community and the destruction of the town,” said Fred Abrahams, special advisor at Human Rights Watch. “This leaves a dark stain on the reputation of a new Libya that claims to respect human rights.”
The UNHCR stress the importance of patience in these situations to ensure the safety of the IDPs in crisis. Gignac added, “It is a positive thing that it has been put on the agenda at the GNC. Whatever happens, it will take time.”
