#libya Clashes in #Jebel_Nafusa subside

By Ashraf Abdul-Wahab.
Tripoli, 16 June 2013:
Six people were killed yesterday in the town of Mizdah in Jabal Nafusa, south of Tripoli, in renewed clashes between members of the Mashasha and Qintarar tribes.
Two of the dead, according to the Solidarity news agency, were members of the Qintarar, killed in shooting in the town during the afternoon; a third, killed at the same time, was a muezzin in the town. The identity of a fourth, also killed in the afternoon, has not been disclosed.
Later in the early evening, two other people, members of a Libya Shield unit manning a checkpoint south of the town, were also killed. Three others were wounded, one seriously.
The town is today reported to be calm following the intervention of elders from both tribes. Shops and bakeries are said to have reopened their doors. Several families who fled the town yesterday have now returned.
Disputes between the Mashasha and the Qantrar are not uncommon. Last August, fighting in the town left at least seven dead following a dispute in the town’s vegetable market. There have also been numerous clashes between the Mashasha and people from Zintan, another historic rival. A year ago, 105 people were repoted by the then government spokesman Nasser Al-Manaa killed and around 500 wounded during clashes betweeen Mashashas and Zintanis.
