Tripoli, 18 May 2013:
An award-winning Algerian comedy, depicting the strong role women play behind the scenes in society, will be shown at the Art House tonight.
Starring Lyes Salem, who also directed the film, and Sarah Reguieg, Masquerades tells the story of Mounir, a man who aspires to be admired by all but feels he is held back by his narcoleptic sister, Rym.
After working for years as a gardener, Mounir decides to improve his family’s fortune and gain more respect by marrying Rym off to a rich man.
When Mounir announces to the village that he has has found a wealthy husband for his sister, she goes along with his ruse, launching the two into a comic adventure.
Masquerades was Salem’s first feature film and won four international film awards.
Tonight’s film-screening is organised by the Arete Cinema Club. Cinemas and theatres in Libya were closed for decades and the cinema club aims to reintroduce films to the community.
The showing of Masquerades starts at 6 pm on Saturday 18 May. The Art House is on Al-Sekka Road in Tripoli.
