Tripoli, 13 February 2013:
The government’s decision to stop Misrata Airport international flights during the anniversary of the 2011 revolution has been rescinded.
Following Prime Minister Ali Zeidan’s announcement on Monday that the Egyptian and Tunisian border crossings were being temporarily closed for “security” reasons between 14 – 18 February, the government announced that international flights in and out of Misrata, Sebha and Abraq airports would also stop during the revolution anniversary period. The authorities were reportedly concerned that security at the three airports might not be up to scratch if there were an attack.
Abdulhamed Garwash, Gulf Services station manager at Misrata airport, told LH this morning, Wednesday, that the Ministry of Transport changed its mind yesterday evening. “The airport will continue to be open normally — for passengers, for cargo, for everything”, he said.
The ministry had inspected security services at the accepted that they were up to standard, Garwash explained. “We showed that we can operate securely.”
It is not confirmed if the ban on Sebha and Abraq international flights has also been revoked.
International flights in and out of Tripoli and Benghazi were not affected by the ban.
