A forest fire destroying 900 hectares of land in the east of
Libya has been brought under control, with the assistance of three
Italian aircrafts.
Prime Minister Ali Zeidan said the fire in Ras al Helal, was tamed at the foot of the Green Mountains, passing his thanks onto the Italian government for their non-hesitant response to the emergency. He also praised the UK who expressed their readiness to intervene from their base in Cyprus.
Due to poor visibility in the area, the fire was unable to be extinguished until Sunday evening. The planes from Italy dropped 120,000 litres of water from the Mediterranean as well as fire-retardant chemicals.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, raising suspicion on the possibility it was deliberate.
