Tripoli, 17 September 2013:
There was traffic chaos on the outskirts of Tripoli this morning after roadblocks were set up by relatives of a kidnapped man, demanding that the government help secure his release.
The family appeared to have blocked every route from Janzour into the city centre, making it impossible for residents to get to downtown Tripoli.
The kidnapped man, described as a successful local shopkeeper, was apparently taken by a gang that the victim’s family say are from Misrata.
“We went to the SSC and were told that, because it involved Misrata, they couldn’t get involved,” the man’s brother told the Libya Herald. “That’s why we are blocking the roads and we will keep them blocked until the government does something.”
The man said that his brother had been kidnapped because he was known to be a wealthy businessman. He added that the incident was not politically-motivated because he was a moderate man who sided with no-one and focused solely on running his business.
