The government of Ali Zidan is increasingly focusing on the south of
Libya to protect it from the increasing danger of becoming a safe haven
for the terrorists in the region, especially those who are affiliated
with Al-Qaeda in Africa.
A security meeting was held on Thursday in Tripoli and chaired by Prime Minister Zidan discussed the urgent need to send the newly appointed Military Governor of the South, General Mohamed Al-Thahbi, to the region and take charge of the situation there.
The meeting was attended by the Chief of Staff of the Libyan army, the head of intelligence and the Military Governor himself, the Libyan news agency reported.
Zidan said after the meeting that it discussed all issues related to activating the nation's resources to meet the challenges which are being faced in southern Libya.
A budget to be prepared by the office of the Chief of Staff and the Military Governor of the South that will include good incentives for solders who work in the region.
The government is also paying attention to the overall development of the region and the urgent needs of the military facilities and other supporting logistics.
Five border and oil installations guards were kidnapped by an armed group smuggling illegal immigrants in southern Libya.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening 30 May near the Sarra military base south of the Kufra city over a thousand kms southeast of Tripoli near the border with Chad.
The Military Governor will be supported by a team of experts who will study the needs of the region and coordinate with related ministries to prepare a comprehensive plan that meets these needs.
Among the urgent problems that will be tackled immediately is the housing situation in Kufra city and the tribal fault lines within the city. A committee from the Authority of Public Projects will be visiting the city and prepare a study on how to solve the existing problems.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of the matter and the need to immediately start working on it. He expressed the government’s willingness to provide all the assistance needed to overcome any difficulties faced by the officials in the south.
