Preparations have begun across Libya for the 17th anniversary
of the Abu Salim prison massacre on June 29th 1996. 1270 inmates lost
their lives when the guards committed a relentless attack against the
helpless prisoners.
In Tripoli and Benghazi, a campaign is being set up to mark the anniversary. The campaign manager is film director Mohammed Makhlouf. He told the Libyan News Agency on Monday that the campaign is sponsored by the Association Families of Abu Salim Martyrs.
The campaign is aimed to consolidate the Abu Salim tragedy into the younger generations of Libya, and to show the sacrifices martyrs have made in the past in order to restore freedom in the country.
There will events taking place by Martyrs Square in Tripoli, while visitors can see the drawings carved on the walls by inmates during their time at Abu Salim prison.
Documentaries will be screened and books will be exhibited, while photographs and posters will highlight the extreme suffering the families of victims have faced, struggling for justice and attempting to raise the profile of the horrific Abu Salim massacre.
