A spokesman for the Navy announced the capture of a cargo
ship attempting to smuggle “400 tons” of diesel fuel to Malta, according
to the Libyan News Agency.
Colonel Ayoub Kasim said the crew on deck consisted of 7 Egyptians and a Maltese, who accepted responsibility for the stolen load, and admitted to previous missions on the same vessel.
The “Levante” ship, flying the flag of Panama and it’s destination registered as Greece, was stormed by coast guards as the ship was ready to sail to Malta.
Being under suspicion, the Libyan Navy have been on the lookout which led to the ship being seized. 6 containers arrived at Zuwara port on April 2 & 4, which were then filled with diesel.
This comes days after a large quantity of drugs were discovered.
“Approximately 700 kg was seized late on Thursday, being preserved in 20 bags found floating near the coast, in the region between Misrata and Sirte,” Colonel Ayoub Kasim reported on Friday.
On Sunday he said: “The Libyan Navy is determined to hunt down those seeking to undermine the national economy and the people of Libya, against all illegal act.”
This is the second time a ship has been seized for smuggling fuel from Libya to Malta in less than 10 days.
