Launch of Action Plan for Social Justice, Forgiveness and Reconciliation in #Libya

Al Mubadara Libya (The Libya Initiative), the collective cultural action plan promoting social healing and a political culture of social justice, forgiveness and reconciliation in Libya, will be officially inaugurated next Saturday May 4 at the Radisson Blu Hotel Mahary in Tripoli, with the participation of General National Congress, GNC, President Magharief and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Leymah Gbowee.

Created by Bahiya Kanoun, president of Al Mubadara Libya Assalam, and by Maria Nicoletta Gaida, president of the Ara Pacis Initiative, the Al Mubadara Libya action plan aims to reach and involve all Libyan peoples in a nation-wide, collective effort of storytelling, listening and sharing.

The launch event will see the participation of Libyan government officials, local authorities and prominent personalities from the field of reconciliation, justice and social justice, including the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Leymah Gbowee; the "Gaza Doctor" and author of "I Shall Not Hate" Izzeldin Abuelaish; and Harvard University associate and creator of the "Dignity Model", Donna Hicks.

The action plan has obtained the patronage of the President of the General National Congress of Libya and the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and of the Libyan Ministries of Culture, Social Affairs, Interior, Tourism, Local Government, Youth and Sports, Oil, Martyrs and Missing People and Media.

Mr Mohamed Yousef el-Magharief will inaugurate the launch event that will also feature, among others, the Libyan Minister of Culture, Habib Mohammed Al-Amin, Giuseppe Buccino, Ambassador of Italy to Libya, and Khalid Chaouki, President of the Committee on Culture of the Italian Chamber of Deputies.

Mohammed Karwad, intellectual and former-combatant from Misurata, will moderate the two roundtable sessions on the subject of "social justice" and "social healing", to which institutional representatives, civil society and international guests are invited to participate.

The morning programme will close with the performance of the winning rap group from the "Libyan Rap for Reconciliation" Facebook contest.

The afternoon programme will feature the conflict transformation training workshops and experience-sharing sessions: "Forgiveness, Healing and Illness: The Inner Link" - session led by Izzeldin Abuelaish; and " Dignity Leadership for Communities in Conflict" - workshop led by Donna Hicks.

The event will furthermore inaugurate the "F Word: Images of Forgiveness" exhibition, founded by Marina Cantacuzino for The Forgiveness Project.

The exhibition, which has been displayed in over 450 venues worldwide, will include Libyan stories of suffering and forgiveness, written and filmed by renowned British-Libyan film director Mohamed Maklouf, founder and director of Arab Screen Independent Film Festival.

A special event: "Uncovering the truth - transitional justice in the changing Arab countries: Rape in the hands of the tyrant… weapon of war/weapon of suppression of an entire people" organised by Observatory of Gender in Times of Crisis and Ara Pacis Initiative will be held in the afternoon, with the participation of President Mohamed Magharief, Leymah Gbowee, Nobel Peace Laureate, Annick Cojean, French journalist, author of "The Prey - in the Harem of Ghaddafi" and other personalities.
