Oman is reported to have reassured Libya that members of the former
Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s family who are currently living in the
sultanate will not interfere in Libyan politics, Libya's Foreign
Minister Mohammed Abdelaziz.
The Libyan minister told AFP: “The Sultanate of Oman has accepted to treat them as political refugees and this is its right. What we are concerned about is that they carry out no political activities against the February 17 revolt.”
Abdelaziz said went on to say: “We have received reassurances on several occasions from the Omanis that this (concern) will be respected.”
Abdelaziz said the former Libyan dictator's daughter Ayesha, and the rest of the Gaddafi family, including her two brothers Mohammed and Hannibal, as well as other relatives who had fled to Algeria during the uprising have been granted refuge in Oman.
They had all sought refuge in Algeria after the fall of Tripoli in August 2011 during the 2011 revolution. Another member of the family, second son Saadi, fled to Niger in September 2011.
Muatassim, Seif al-Arab and Khamis, three other sons of Qaddafi, were killed during the conflict in separate incidents, while another, Seif al-Islam, was arrested in November 2011 and is awaiting trial.
