A group of trucks attempting to smuggle fuel tanks to Tunisia on Saturday night were ambushed by the Libyan Air Force.
A substantial amount of trucks are being smuggled into Tunisia on a daily basis, the number being estimated at 20 per day. Due to the quantity of fuel being stolen, a member of the Air Force believes a third party are involved in the operation, questioning the border guard brigades in western territory.
He went on to say: “The space occupied by the smugglers is 15 to 20 kilometers south of the Wazen border. They are operating on difficult terrain on the Libyan-Tunisian border. Due to area not being patrolled by Libya, nor Tunisia, it places the Air Force in an awkward position in terms of the possibility of air strikes on the smugglers.”
He said smugglers are using border areas where air strikes cannot take place, making it easy to escape to the other side. When the trafficking was spotted, the Chief ordered an air strike in order to demonstrate the seriousness of their activity, dropping 29 rockets.
In addition to the air force, the operation against smugglers is in cooperation with the police, border guards and the army, aiming to arrest the traffickers and also confiscate any technology that aides their operation.
The pilot asked the Grand Mufti to appear on television to warn the smugglers who are draining Libyan wealth and pose as a threat to its economy, believing his words would be a psychological blow for them.
