Libyan Justice Minister Salah al-Marghani announced Sunday the
construction of a centralized prison near the capital to replace the
numerous temporary detention facilities across the country.
The new prison, known as al-Jawia, would be located at the headquarters of the Military Air-force College in Misrata, some 200 km east of Tripoli, to hold all prisoners in the city, al-Marghani said at an evening joint press conference with Prime Minster Ali Zaidan.
He cited abuses and violations of law in those improvised detention centers and said that the government is determined to close them.
A large number of temporary prisons and detention centers sprouted across Libya in the aftermath of the social upheaval of the North African nation.
In Misrata alone, about 2,000 prisoners are being held in various detention facilities across the city.
