The leader of a militia affiliated to the Libyan army has survived an attempt on his life by unidentified gunmen in the eastern city of Benghazi.
Ziyad Baalam, the commander of Omar Mukhtar Brigade, sustained several gunshot wounds after being attacked in Salmani district in central Benghazi, a medical source told Anadolu Agency on Monday, asking not to be named.
Baalam was rushed to Benghazi hospital and had been admitted to the intensive care unit, he added.
The Libyan authorities are yet to comment on the report.
Baalam is widely seen as one of the most influential militia leaders in Benghazi.
He has repeatedly called for incorporating Libyan militias into the national army and police forces, drawing criticism from several other militia leaders.
In recent weeks, Libya has been gripped by deep polarization between two active parliaments and governments vying for power.
Since the ouster and killing of autocratic ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libyan authorities have struggled to restore law and order, with many militias that had helped overthrow the strongman refusing to surrender their weapons.
