Morsi advisor Shehata arrested in Libya’s Tobruk airport

CAIRO: Security forces at Libya’s Tobruk airport arrested ousted President Mohamed Morsi’s advisor Mohamed Shehata for attempting to leave to Turkey using forged documents, MENA reported early Thursday.
The former Egyptian official was arrested after airport officials checked his passport, Head of Tobruk Airport Colonel Mohamed Menfor told Al-Wasat News.
According to Ahram Gate, airport security officials interrogated Shehata, who confessed to illegal entry to Libya and residing at a hotel in Tobruk before trying to travel to Turkey using forged documents.
Menfor said Shehata offered to bribe the airport authorities, but they refused and handed him over to airport security officials, Youm7 reported.
According to the AFP, several Muslim Brotherhood leaders and Islamist allies allegedly fled to Qatar and Turkey following Morsi’s ouster in July 2013, most of them fleeing through Libyan borders or illegal tunnels between Sinai and the Gaza Strip.

Since the Egyptian government designated the Brotherhood as a “terrorist organization” in December 2013, it said Arab states that signed a 1998 “anti-terrorism” agreement should hand over wanted Brotherhood members, Al-Akhbar reported.
