Tripoli: In a shocking incident, at least 92 prisoners reportedly escaped from prison in Libya after attacking the guards on Friday.
The incident took place when the prisoners asked the guards to open door for them as they wanted to consulted the doctor. However, they attacked the guard instead and then escaped, as per news report.
There were only four guards deputed at the prison to watch over 220 prison inmates at the time of the incident.
Hassan bin Sophia, who is spokesman of the Zliten local council, said that 19 prisoners were soon recaptured, two of them wounded when guards opened fire. Local officials are contacting the families of the escapees to convince them to surrender.
Libya has experienced a security vacuum since the 2011 overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi. Earlier this month, 54 detainees escaped from a prison in the capital Tripoli.
