Tripoli, 22 September 2103:
The commander of Tripoli SSC’s Support Unit No 2, Adnan Al-Shibani, was murdered yesterday evening as he left a barber shop in the western suburb or Gurji. A Tunisian barber was also injured in the shooting.
Confirming the killing, SSC head Hashim Bishr told the Libya Herald that it was not clear at this point if it were linked to a personal dispute or an act of political terrorism.
However, given that Tripoli has been relatively free of the military assassinations that continue to plague Benghazi, there are suggestions that organised crime may have been involved. Although head of the support unit, Shibani also owned a number of outlets in Gurji, including the barber shop in Shara Gharbi where he was killed. He lived in the area.
According to Bishr, a taxi without number plates stopped in front of barber’s, a man got out and started shooting randomly, killing Shibani instantly and wounding the Tunisian. He then got back in and the taxi sped off.
The Tunisian barber, named as Abdulbaqi Ben Amara, was initially thought to be have been gravely wounded and was taken to Tripoli Central Hospital. However, according to the Tunisian embassy, he suffered an eye injury and has since been transferred to the Eye hospital in Zawiyat Al-Dahmani.
The Counter Crime Agency is collecting evidence, Bishr said, but so far there are no firm clues as to who is behind the killing.
