Benghazi, 24 July 2013:
Benghazi has endured a challenging period of violence in past months. Thus there is a special atmosphere in the city as its inhabitants celebrate the holy month of Ramadan. Residents are taking this opportunity to get together and be joyful, especially after the hardship the city has suffered with the recent spate of assassinations, explosions and attacks.
Since Ramadan began, the city has been much calmer and there has been a palpably happier mood. Many locals have been passing the time shopping with their children, because Ramadan has brought with it a sense of improved safety and security.
The organising of Iftar tables is one important charitable duty that residents of Benghazi have been undertaking to celebrate the holy month. These tables groan with a mass of different foods, many of which are homemade.
The tables are prepared especially for the poor and needy. However, anyone can share in the free food and drink of the Iftar, including passers-by.
