Benghazi, 29 July 2013:
In the wake of recent events in Benghazi, the Minister of Social Affairs, Kamila Khamis Al-Mazini, last night announced her resignation, at a protest in the city.
Mazini resigned during a speech addressing hundreds of protesters outside the Tibesti Hotel. She condemned recent events in Benghazi, including the assassinations, the deteriorating security situation and what she termed the unacceptable silence of the government.
“With my appreciation and loyalty to the martyrs of 17 February Revolution, the wounded, amputees, missing people and retirees and all Libyans, I am announcing my irreversible resignation from the government,” Mazini said.
She called on the staff of the Social Security Fund to maintain financial support to the country’s most vulnerable people, including the disabled, orphans and families of the martyrs.
On Saturday, Benghazi Congresswoman Ameena Mohamed Al-Mogherbi resigned citing similar reasons.
Last night, the third consecutive night of protests in Benghazi, sparked by the assassination of Abdulsalam Musmari on Friday, demonstrators have decided to start demanding the overthrow of the General National Congress, the government and Benghazi local council. Protestors claim that all three institutions are controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood.
Many said last night that demonstrations would continue until there was a satisfactory reaction to the situation in Benghazi. Protestors also called for safety and security to be enhanced across the whole of the country, through a unified national army and police force.
