Tripoli, 15 June 2013:
Libya won 2-0 against Togo last night in the World Cup qualifier match, moving ahead to nine points at the top of Group I. For Togo it means that it is out of the World Cup.
The match, played in Tripoli’s Sport City was watched by a full capacity crowd of more than 60,000.
Eight minutes after kick-off, Libya’s Faisal Saleh scored the first goal with a penalty kick. Ten minutes later came the second, an own goal from Togo’s Komlan Amewou.
The Libya fans were in boisterous mood throughout the game, urging the players to score more goals but also waving banners about the tragic killings in Benghazi last Saturday, saying “Benghazi is in out hearts”. At the end of the match they invaded the pitch. No-one even bothered to try and stop them.
Cameroon, sitting second in Group I with six points, play the final match in the second round of the group today against DR Congo. It is an away match for them and if they lose, Libya will lead the group and move to Round 3 of the qualify matches, to be played in October and November.
