The building was reportedly hit by two RPGs.
According to a local Sebha resident who lives nearby, it is the second time the shrine has been hit. “It was attacked in February but was then repaired,” he said.
It is unclear who is responsible. Elsewhere in Libya, the destruction of Sufi shrines has been largely the work of militant Salafists. They were believed to be behind the attack on the Al-Andalusi mausoleum in Tajoura outside Tripoli a month ago. It was also extensively damaged in RPG fire.
Significant numbers of Salafists from Derna, said to be members of Ansar Al-Sharia, have been seen in Sebha recently, as well as in Ubari. For them, Sufi shrine are heretical and should be destroyed.
