Tripoli, 15 May 2013:
There were clashes last night in Benghazi between the forces of the Joint Security Room and some assailants who tried to release a captured prisoner from one of the city’s police stations.
One of the assailants was killed and two were captured during the clashes at the police station in the al-Hadaiq area, a Joint Security Room source told the Libya Herald today, on condition of anonymity.
The attackers set fire to part of the building, and some of the shop fronts nearby were also damaged, the source said.
This afternoon the police station was again attacked, this time by friends and relatives of the man who was killed last night. In retaliation they also set the building alight, but no one was injured.
Since the formation of the Joint Security Room, there have been several attempts to target premises in Benghazi.
The majority of the country’s government and 34 members of the General National Congress (GNC) have been in the city since yesterday, to follow recent events more closely.
President of the GNC Mohamed Magarief said, at a press conference, that the Joint Security Room in Benghazi would succeed, despite previous failed attempts by security operations.
