The current EU's Deputy Head of Delegation to Egypt, Nataliya Apostolova, was appointed to lead the delegation of the European Union (EU) to Libya, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Catherine Ashton, announced.
Apostolova comes from Bulgaria and is certainly not the first Bulgarian to lead an EU delegation. Other Bulgarians who perform the functions of Heads of Delegation include also Philip Dmitrov in Georgia and the appointed last year Yuri Sterk in Uzbekistan. Apostolova previously worked in the European Commission's Directorate-General for Enlargement and at the Permanent Representation of Bulgaria to the EU.
The new head was appointed after the previous one, Peter Zsoldos, left his post for personal reasons, Ashton’s spokesperson told New Europe.
"I am delighted to announce the appointment of Nataliya Apostolova to head up our Delegation in Tripoli,” said Ashton and added: “Her talent and expertise are significant assets for the EU's external action and I look forward to working with her in support of stability and the transition to democracy in Libya."
The EU's presence in Libya has been expanded significantly since the
beginning of the popular uprising in Libya in February 2011. An office
in Benghazi was opened in May 2011, followed by an office in Tripoli in
August 2011, which was subsequently opened as an EU Delegation by the EU High Representative in November 2011.
