Tripoli, 11 May 2013:
After a fortnight of militia sieges, protests, and increasing political uncertainty, the British embassy are temporarily withdrawing some staff from the country.
Citing the “security implications of the ongoing political uncertainty” in the country as its reason, the British Foreign Office (FCO) said the staff withdrawals were temporary.
The affected staff are: “Mainly those who work in support of government ministries which have been affected by recent developments,” a spokesperson for the FCO said.
The embassy will remain open and continue to offer visa and consular services.
Meanwhile, government departments have been cancelling international meetings. Following a request from the Ministry of Economy, a Libya investment conference due to take place in London at the end of May has been postponed. The General Electric Company of Libya (GECOL) has also postponed a meeting with an American company specialising in e-governance.
