Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, already placed under formal
investigation in March over claims he received illegal donations from
France's richest woman is now being investigated by prosecutors over
allegations that Libya helped fund his successful Presidential election
bid in 2007.
French news agency AFPM has quoted a judicial source saying that among other issues, the inquiry would look at charges of "active and passive corruption", "influence peddling." Sarkozy has denied all the allegations The first hint at the funding by the former Libyan regime in comments by Seif al-Islam, son of the then leader Muammar Gaddafi, during the NATO-led air strikes on Libya in 2011. He accused accused Sarkozy of taking millions of his father's money for campaign funding. A Lebanese businessman Ziad Takieddine, who has long acted as a middleman between France and the Middle East, is reported telling judges way back in December 2012, that he has written proof that the former French President's campaign bid had been "abundantly" financed by Tripoli. Takieddine added that a a further €50m euros worth of payments continued after he became President. Sarkozy, who previously hinted that he might consider another run for the presidency in 2017, has always denied any wrongdoing. In July last year, after he lost his presidential immunity following his election defeat to Francois Hollande, police raided Sarkozy's home and offices after allegations that he had takne financial advantage of 90-year-old L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt, while mayor of the wealthiest suburb in Paris. Both Sarkozy and Mrs Bettancourt have vehemently denied the claims. |
