BEIRUT: Three explosives without detonators found on the Qalamoun-Tripoli highway in north Lebanon overnight were not targeting caretaker PM Najib Mikati, a source close to Mikati said Friday.
“The bombs found on the road were not intended for Mr. Mikati,” Fares Gemayel, the media advisor to Mikati, said.
The local newspaper An-Nahar said the bomb was intended for Mikati while he was on his way back from his hometown Tripoli.
A security source told The Daily Star Friday three bombs that lacked detonators were stuffed inside a plastic gallon and left on the Qalamoun road Thursday night.
The source said military explosive experts who examined the bombs determined that they were not set to explode since they had no detonators.
Military Prosecutor Saqr Saqr tasked Lebanese Army Intelligence with launching a probe to determine the perpetrators and their motives.
Later Friday, two old hand grenades that were not set to explode were found in the Tripoli neighborhood of Abi Samra, according to the security source
