On this day 37 years ago, the organisation of mass students
demonstrations across Libya’s major cities, eager to rally their
opposition to the Gaddafi regime resulted in a recurring nightmare.
Protests were to take place, expressing concern over the military regime which was evidently responsible for the collapse of Libya’s education, economy and social stability. As the students were fighting for freedom at a time where progression appeared globally rife, Gaddafi’s regressive regime was deteriorating Libya’s potential to step onto the global stage.
The formation of government funded student union’s was fuel on the fire, as students rebelled by forming their own. This led to the arrests and a military presence on school grounds.
Naturally, students were displeased with the invasion on their education, causing the organisation of protests. On the 7 April 1976, hundreds of students were arrested as an example of the merciless regime that was ripping Libya’s insides out. Gaddafi forces stubbornly stood their ground and stormed universities in the cities of Tripoli and Benghazi, using force against the voice of youth.
The courageous students who stressed their opinion were detained for several months, with some released only to be re-arrested months later, establishing the lack of room for criticism aimed at the dictatorship.
A year later, 7 April 1977, the executions of students involved in the previous years events were aired on Libyan State TV, taking place in Benghazi’s public square, and Tripoli’s Al-Fateh University. In the week that followed, opposing military officers faced the same punishment with their close ones being forced to participate or watch the executions.
The atrocities that followed in April’s to come formed a dark cloud over the calendar’s fourth month. As a flaunt of the regimes relentlessness, executions continued well into the 80′s.
On this day, the remembrance of those who bravely challenged, and lost their lives as a result will be forever remembered for their heroism.
