Tripoli, 29 March 2013:
The Libya Movie Awards, a new short film competition for talented young Libyan film-makers, will now be accepting entries until 20 April.
Films should be between one and ten minutes long and entrants must be Libyan nationals. All entries must fall into one of the following categories: creative (for example drama, comedy or horror), culture, human rights, trailers, music videos, animation, awareness-raising videos or documentary.
A new category has also been added for professional film-makers. The director of the Italian Cultural Institute, Rubens Piovano, told the Libya Herald that the winner in this category will attend the Cannes Film Festival, as well as have their film included in the festival’s ‘professional catalogue.’
Other prizes in the competition include a professional camcorder, a Macbook Pro computer and LD 1,000.
The competition hopes to encourage the creation of a Libyan film industry and help build a community of film-makers. As well as discovering new Libyan talent, the contest will give a platform to show social issues in the country after the revolution.
The competition is being run by the Italian Cultural Institute and local NGO 1-Libya. It is being funded by the European Union.
The Libya Movie Awards will take place from 25 to 27 April at the Al Mahari RadissonBlu Hotel in Tripoli. There will be workshops and lectures in the mornings and award-winning films will be shown in the afternoons.
