The death toll of people who consumed poisoned alcohol in Libya has fluctuated but always went up according to the latest tally.
Tripoli head of security said on Tuesday that the number of deaths has reached 79, higher than an earlier account by the Ministry of Health on the same day.
Colonel Mahmoud al-Sharif told reporters that the authorities are searching for two suspects who have relation to the making of the poisonous alcohol.
Earlier during the day the head of the Crisis Committee, established to monitor the health disaster in Libya, Dr. Usama Abdul Jalil, said the death toll was 60 people and the total number of infected poisoned cases was 709 distributed on five hospitals.
A source at one of the Tripoli hospitals told the The Tripoli Post that there were 18 women among the victims including 14 Libyans, three Tunisians and one Moroccan. The source did not specify how many women were among the dead.
In a statement released Tuesday evening, the ministry of interior said it was making leads in the case and it has important information on the suspects. It also said the case is sensitive and it will not always announce the results of the ongoing investigation.
Al-Sharif said the authorities are looking into “whether it was the methanol or bad fermentation that caused the large number of victims,” as quoted by the Associated Press on Tuesday.
