An air base close to the southern city of Sabha was attacked
by an unidentified armed group on Saturday, targeting pilots assigned to
border protection.
In a statement by the Defence Ministry received by the Libyan News Agency, they said the attack resulted in the death of Colonel Musa Al-awamy Rizkallah, one of the assistant military governors of southern Libya, and a soldier, Sami Mohammed Abdullah Al Barasai. Two others were injured, and one remains in critical condition.
Saad al-Orfi says the attack early Saturday targeted a military air base about 45 kilometers (30 miles) north of the city of Sabha. He says the assailants were heavily armed and clashed with government forces stationed at the base.
The Defence Ministry condemns the attack and pledges to prosecute those responsible. Security is to be intensified in the area whilst an investigation into the incident is underway.
