Strikes at the Libya-Egypt border on Friday caused illegal immigrants leaving Libya to cause further disruption.
Egyptian staff at the border were demanding housing closer to the border town, Sollum, to avoid excessive travel to work, according to Egyptian newspaper Al-Wafd. This caused a blockage at the border, instigating the riot.
The clashes were fueled by the deportation, as an estimated 200 Egyptians were being driven across the border. They began to throw stones at Libyans and vehicles. Locals from Sollum are reported to have moved in to calm the situation, only to cause further violence.
This follows a similar attack on Libyan vehicles when 600 Egyptians were deported last week.
The Libya-Egypt borders security has faced issues since the beginning of February. The anniversary of the Feb 17th revolution caused a stir of concern by Libya, and then local Egyptians protested at the enforcement of visas to visit Libya. It was only March 4th when the border reopened.
