International Football Federation, FIFA, president Joseph Blatter has
given a boost to Libya's hopes of organising the 2017 African Cup of
Nations competition by saying that the world football governing body
would support Libya’s intention to host the event.
Blatter disclosed his support on the sidelines of the 35th General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football, CAF held at the weekend in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.
Despite the suspension of domestic competitions for the last two years, since February 2011with the start of the February 17 Revolution, and the country's insistence not to resume the league championship due to security reasons, Blatter said: “Libya has a bright future in football and will be well-equipped in terms of infrastructure.”
Blatter said that FIFA had also approved the first free elections held by the Libyan Football Federation, and would provide the necessary support for the country, which is currently going through an important period in its history.
CAF president Issa Hayatou, who was re-elected unopposed for another term, extending to almost three decades his tenure in charge of African football, also reiterated the African football governing body’s support to Libya in its efforts to host AFCON 2017. Libya had been set to host AFCON 2013 but the event was moved to South Africa following instability in the country.
Hayatou said that although the vote for the 2017 host had not been conducted, all CAF executive members have expressed their willingness to see Libya host the tournament.
