UN Secretary General
Ban Ki-moon has deplored a recent deadly bomb attack at Turkish-Syrian
border, calling the assault intolerable.
"The Secretary-General strongly condemns the attack at the Cilvegozu border crossing between Turkey and Syria, which has led to the death of both Turkish and Syrian nationals," Ban’s spokesman Martin Nesirky said in a statement on Tuesday.
The UN chief “underscores the unacceptability of using violence against civilians" and is concerned about the dangers regarding the possible spread of the Syrian unrest to neighboring countries, Nesirky added.
At least 13 people were killed and dozens injured when a Syrian mini-bus exploded at the crossing on Turkey's border with Syria near the Turkish town of Reyhanli on Monday.
The Cilvegozu border post is one of the main crossing points for Syrian refugees into the neighboring country, according to Turkish officials.
Witnesses said they saw the Syrian-registered vehicle, which was travelling from the direction of Syria, drive up to the post shortly before the explosion.
The Turkish government, however, started an investigation into the incident, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said following the blast.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
The Syrian government has said that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and that a very large number of the militants operating in the country are foreign nationals.
