RAMALLAH — Israeli troops Tuesday arrested eight Hamas members in early-morning raids in the northern West Bank, Palestinian security sources said.
They said that soldiers detained Hamas activists in the city of Nablus and the town of Tulkarem, among them Rafat Nassif, a former Hamas spokesman.
Assif has spent more than 11 years total in Israeli jails, most recently from July 2009-November 2011, and was a “prominent political activist” during the second intifada, the movement said.
Hamas spokesman said that the detainees were university students and prisoners recently releases from Israeli jails.
Palestinian security sources said that the other five Palestinians were arrested in the Bethlehem and Hebron governorates.
The Israeli army confirmed the arrest and said that they were taken in for questioning by for questioning by agents of Shin Bet, the Israeli internal intelligence.
The Israeli security forces have recently carried out a series of arrests of Hamas members in the West Bank including three lawmakers.
Israel military sources have expressed concern over Hamas’ growing popularity in the West Bank, as well as in the Gaza Strip, where the movement seized power in a bloody coup in 2007.
The sources said that Hamas has been attempting to rebuild its infrastructure in the West Bank as means of leveraging the advantages Hamas said it has gained over Israel during recent eight day aggression on Gaza Strip.
The conflict saw 175 Palestinians and six Israelis killed.According to the recent Palestinian statistics, Israel is holding 4,900 prisoners in 23 prisons and detention camps in Israel and in the West Bank of whom 198 children, 8 females and 17 lawmakers from Hamas, Fatah and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine
