Record ivory haul seized in Kenya
Report by Melissa Nathoo
Police in Kenya have seized their biggest haul of illegal ivory on record.
The two tonne discovery is worth almost £750,000.
The tusks were heading to Indonesia, to fuel a growing demand for what is seen in Asia as a luxury product. Half the world's ivory ends up in China.
Kenya Wildlife Services director William Kiprono blames the rise in poaching on Far East countries.
"The price of ivory and rhino horn continues to rise by the day, leading to increased poaching of elephants and rhinos," he said.
"Growing affluence and economic growth in the Far East and South-East Asian countries has increased demand for natural resources, including an increased demand for wildlife and wildlife products."
It is said around 300 elephants would have died to produce the amount of ivory seized by Kenyan authorities.
It follows the mass shooting of a family of 11 elephants on January 5.
