in what has been described as an attempt to tighten border security and
clamp down on illegal immigration, Libyan authorities have announced
that all foreign visitors to the country must have a visa.
Previously travellers from countries such as Tunisia, Turkey and Jordan were not required to have it. Additionally, only Egyptians and Libyans are to be allowed to use the border crossing at Musaid.
Furthermore, companies in the company wanting to employ foreign workers need to satisfy the Libyan Interior Ministry.
Although not in any way involved in the recent deadly terrorist attack in neighbouring Algeria, Libya has been trying to boost security at its oil fields in order to avoid a repeat of the deadly terrorist attack in Algeria
Many of the country’s oil and gas exploration and production sites are located in the sparsely-populated deserts of Western Libya, not far from the Algerian border.
Colonel Ahmed Al-Kabasha, a senior commander of the Defenve Ministry’s petroleum facility guards has been quoted saying: “We must be fully prepared for any emergency”.
Meanwhile, in comments to the Wall Street Journal, Libya’s deputy oil minister Omar Shakmak said that Libya will also be sending more troops to police its border with Algeria.
