Thousands of people have joined in the gun buyback event in Los Angeles exchanging guns for supermarket gift cards.
The annual gun buyback is usually held in May but Los Angeles held the event in advance after the Newtown school shooting.
The anonymous program means guns can be turned in with no questions.
Handguns, rifles and shotguns can be exchanged for $100 store gift cards and assault weapons earn cards of $200.
The police will return the collected guns to the owners or destroy them.
"We're hoping that by getting these guns here and melted down, they won't be a problem for us at some point in the future," said Andrew Smith from the Los Angeles police department.
The crime rate in the city has decreased by 33 per cent since the first buyback event in 2009.
