ALGIERS, (Xinhua): The two government allied parties in Algeria, the National Democratic Rally (RND) and the National Liberation Front (FLN), have won the majority of seats in the partial renewal of the Council of Nation (the upper house of parliament), the local APS news agency reported Sunday.
Citing initial results of the interior ministry, APS said the RND grabbed 24 seats, which added to the 20 already acquired for a total of 44 seats. It thus became the first political force in the Council of Nation, followed by the FLN with a total of 39 seats.
Independent candidates advanced to the third spot after winning three seats, while the forth is shared by the National Algerian Front (FNA), the Socialist Forces Front (FFS) and the Islamist Movement for the Society of Peace (MSP) with two seats each.
The Algerian Popular Movement (MPA), El-Moustakbal Front and AHD 54 won one seat each.
The newly-elected members of 48 provincial assemblies and 1,548 municipal assemblies participated Saturday in the renewal of half of the upper house members.
The Council of Nation has 144 members, of which 96 are indirectly elected and 48 are appointed by the president. Their term is six years. The council is renewed by half every three years
