#Facebook gets unwelcome look at hackers’ dark side

San Francisco: Facebook is getting an unwelcome look at the shady side of the hacking culture that CEO Mark Zuckerberg celebrates.
Intruders recently infiltrated the systems running the world’s largest online social network but did not steal any sensitive information about Facebook’s more than 1 billion users, according to a blog posting Friday by the company’s security team.
The unsettling revelation is the latest breach to expose the digital cracks in a society and an economy that is storing an ever-growing volume of personal and business data online.
The news didn’t seem to faze investors. Facebook Inc’s stock dipped 10 cents to $28.22 in Friday’s extended trading.

The main building at Facebook’s Menlo Park, California, headquarters lists its address as 1 Hacker Way. From there, Facebook serves as the gatekeeper for billions of potentially embarrassing photos and messages that get posted each month.
This time, at least, that material didn’t get swept up in the digital break-in that Facebook said it discovered last month. The company didn’t say why it waited until the afternoon before a holiday weekend to inform its users about the hack.
It was a sophisticated attack that also hit other companies, according to Facebook, which didn’t identify the targets.
“As part of our ongoing investigation, we are working continuously and closely with our own internal engineering teams, with security teams at other companies, and with law enforcement authorities to learn everything we can about the attack, and how to prevent similar incidents in the future,” Facebook wrote on the blog.
Online short-messaging service Twitter acknowledged being hacked earlier this month. In that security breakdown, Twitter warned that the attackers may have stolen user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords belonging to 250,000 of the more than 200 million accounts set up on its service.
Late last month, both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal — two of the three largest US newspapers — said they were hit by China-based hackers believed to be interested in monitoring media coverage of topics that the Chinese government deemed important.
Facebook didn’t identify a suspected origin of its hacking incident, but provided a few details about how it apparently happened.
The security lapse was traced to a handful of employees who visited a mobile software developer’s website that had been compromised, which led to malware being installed on the workers’ laptops. The PCs were infected even though they were supposed to be protected by the latest anti-virus software and were equipped with other up-to-date protection.
Facebook linked part of the problem to a security hole in the Java software that triggered a safety alert from the US Department of Homeland Security last month. The government agency advised computer users to disable Java on their machines because of a weakness that could be exploited by hackers.
Oracle Corp, the owner of Java, has since issued a security patch that it says has fixed the problem. In its post, Facebook said it received the Java fix two weeks ago.
Facebook never mentioned the word “hack” in describing the breach. That, no doubt, was by design because hacking is a good thing in Zuckerberg’s vernacular.
To most people, hacking conjures images of malevolent behaviour by intruders listening to private voicemails and villains crippling websites or breaking into email accounts.
Zuckerberg provided his interpretation of the word in a manifesto titled “The Hacker Way” that he included in the documents that the company filed for its initial public offering of stock last year.
“The word ‘hacker’ has an unfairly negative connotation from being portrayed in the media as people who break into computers,” Zuckerberg wrote. “In reality, hacking just means building something quickly or testing the boundaries of what can be done.”

Stop meddling in #Syria: Grand Mufti to #Turkey

Syrian Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun has criticized Turkey’s meddling in the domestic affairs of Syria.

There is evidence that Turkey is both arming and financing the armed groups in Syria. Turkey has also opened its borders to criminals and thieves to infiltrate into Syrian territory, Sheikh Hassoun said in an interview with Almayadeen Arabic news channel on Friday.

He also called on Syrian government to take legal action against Turkish Prime Minister Raccip Tayipp Erdogan through the United Nations and the International Criminal Police Organization, known as Interpol.

He added that Syria is paying the price for its support of the resistance and the Palestinian cause.

On Friday, the Syrian government sent a letter to the UN, blasting Turkey's "destructive" role in the conflict that has ravaged the country for the past 23 months.

In the letter, the Syrian Foreign Ministry accused Ankara of publicly supporting and financing terrorists fighting against the Syrian government and allowing its soil to be used for training and housing anti-Damascus terrorist groups.

"Turkey has turned its territory into camps used to house, train, finance and infiltrate armed terrorist groups, among them the al-Qaeda network and the al-Nusra Front," said the letter.

It also accused Turkey of taking "increasingly hostile stances towards Syria, by blocking measures taken by Damascus for a political solution to end the unrest."

Analysts believe the move by Turkey is part of an anti-Syria plot hatched by the US, Qatar and Saudi Arabia to fuel the unrest in the country by increasing the number of militants fighting against the government.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals

Countdown starts for collapse of #AlKhalifa in #Bahrain: #Iran MP

The Al Khalifa family in Bahrain is on the brink of collapse as the Bahraini people can no longer tolerate the authoritarian rule of the regime, an Iranian lawmaker says.

Ebrahim Aqa-Mohammadi, a member of Iran’s Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Saturday, “Countdown has started for the overthrow of Al Khalifa regime.”

He pointed to the second anniversary of the outbreak of the popular uprising in the Persian Gulf sheikhdom, saying, “The inequality of wealth distribution in Bahrain and the ban on political freedoms have persecuted the people of Bahrain and ultimately incited them against the regime.”

“Getting the support of Saudi forces and also the green light of hegemonic countries, particularly the US, the Al Khalifa regime committed massacre in the country and even used violence against children and women; therefore, in response to such actions, the Bahraini people will not be satisfied with anything, except for the removal of the violent regime,” the Iranian lawmaker stated.

Bahrainis have held major anti-regime demonstrations to mark the anniversary of the uprising of mid-February 2011.

The demonstrators say they will continue holding protests until their demands for the establishment of a democratically-elected government and an end to rights violations are met.

Four #Turkish officers killed in #Aleppo clashes: Report

At least four Turkish officers have been killed in clashes between Syrian government troops and foreign-backed militants in Syria's northern city of Aleppo.

The Syrian website Syria Now reports that the corpses of the Turkish officers were identified among the militants killed in the Friday fighting in the al-Bab district of the flashpoint city.

Reports say the Syrian government troops killed dozens of militants and inflicted heavy losses on them in two days of fighting for the control of the international airport and the nearby Nairab airfield in Aleppo.

The airport and the military airfield both remain under government control.

Damascus has repeatedly accused Ankara of supporting the insurgents who are fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says the plight of civilians in Syria has reached catastrophic levels, stressing that it will continue humanitarian operations in the Arab country.

"After two years with no end to the military conflict, the situation of the civilian population has reached nothing short of catastrophic," Pierre Kraehenbuehl, ICRC director of operations, said on Friday.

"I've come back from Syria convinced that we must expand operations in coming weeks and months…," Pierre added.

Kraehenbuehl also said that medical services had turned into a "wasteland" in many parts of Syria, adding that displaced families were forced to change location repeatedly, and water and food supplies were under constant threat.

The ICRC official went on to say that crisscrossing the frontline between government and militant areas is a major problem for aid operations.

"Syria is not a case where you can map out a frontline easily. It shifts," Kraehenbuehl said.

The ICRC has been providing support for some1.5 million Syrians, via the Syrian Red Crescent.

According to the United Nations, nearly 70,000 people have been killed in 22 months of conflict between the Syrian government forces and the foreign-backed opposition groups.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government has said that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and that a very large number of the militants operating in the country are foreign nationals.

Several international human rights organizations have accused foreign-sponsored militants of committing war crimes.

#Assad must stay out of talks: #Opposition

The so-called Syrian National Coalition has expressed opposition to the engagement of Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad in any talks aimed at ending crisis in the Arab country.

"Bashar Assad and security leadership…are outside the political process…," the opposition coalition said in a statement on Friday.

The bloc added that the decision is part of a framework that it has drawn up for finding solutions to the unrest.

On Thursday, the coalition issued an eight-point framework in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, following a meeting to discuss a proposal by the bloc’s head Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib, to hold talks with the Syrian government’s representatives.

On February 13, the Syrian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying the country is ready for dialogue with the opposition in Syria as long as it is based on political reforms outlined by Assad.

"Damascus's gates are open for dialogue on a Syrian land and under the roof of the homeland," the statement read.

On January 30, Khatib announced that he is ready for “direct discussions” with representatives of the Syrian government in Cairo, Tunis or Istanbul.

However, he said that there are “basic conditions” before holding talks with the Syrian officials over the crisis in the Arab country.

The so-called Syrian National Coalition and other foreign-backed opposition groups have stressed in the past that the Syrian president must step down before any negotiations.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government has said that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and that a very large number of the militants operating in the country are foreign nationals.

A senior Iraqi intelligence officer and two of his bodyguards have been killed in a bomb attack in northern Iraq, security officials say.

The incident took place on Saturday when a bomber blew himself up outside the home of Brigadier General Aouni Ali, the head of Iraq's main intelligence academy, at Tal Afar near the city of Mosul.

"Guards killed one bomber, but when the brigadier general and his bodyguards went out another bomber ran among them and blew himself up," a local official said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Iraq has witnessed an increase in attacks in recent weeks. More than ten attacks have targeted security forces, civilians and a lawmaker since January.

Pro-autonomy leaders in #Libya urge calm on revolt anniversary

BENGHAZI — Pro-autonomy leaders in eastern Libya urged followers to cancel planned rallies against central authorities Friday for fear they could ignite violence as the country marks two years since the start of its revolution.

Various opposition and interest groups in Benghazi, fount of the 2011 uprising that ousted dictator Muammar Gaddafi, called for demonstrations to demand better security and investment for Libya’s second biggest city. “Everyone is carrying weapons in Benghazi and there is still general chaos and confusion,” activist Zeid El-Ragas said. “As activists it’s our responsibility to minimize harm in our city.”

While Sunday will be the actual two-year anniversary of the start of the anti-Gaddafi revolt, celebrations were to begin Friday in remembrance of the arrest of a human rights lawyer in Benghazi that kindled unrest.

Many Libyans, particularly those in the east, have been urging citizens to take to the streets to voice their discontent over the Tripoli government’s inability to provide security by disarming militias or moving toward writing a constitution.

Security is a particular headache in Benghazi where violence against foreigners and police assassinations by inchoate groups have become regular occurrences.

In Benghazi, daily life has been disrupted by violence and unrest on top of demands for greater autonomy or investment in a region separated from Tripoli 1,000 km away to the west. This has led to calls in the region — where most of Libya’s oil wealth lies — for a return to a federal political structure, that is, more regional autonomy, which Libya had before Gaddafi seized power in a coup in 1969.

Federalist groups say they have come under harsh criticism from the central government and even religious leaders accusing them of calling for a separation of the east from the west of Libya, something they deny they want to do. — Reuters

Thousands of #Iraqis demand govt’s ouster

BAGHDAD — Thousands of people in Sunni-majority areas of Iraq called Friday for the government’s fall amid a spike in violence that has accompanied a political stalemate two months before provincial polls. The demonstrations, which have been ongoing for nearly two months, have steadfastly urged for the ouster of Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki while decrying the alleged targeting of minority Sunnis by the Shiite-led authorities. On Friday, the protests began after weekly Muslim prayers in Mosul, Samarra, Kirkuk, Baquba, Ramadi and Fallujah — all predominantly Sunni — as well as Sunni-majority areas of Baghdad under heavy security as the central government has voiced fears the rallies had been infiltrated by militants.“There is no meaning to freedom in a country where criminals are free,” read one banner in Samarra, while another warned central government officials, “Baghdad, we are coming”.“The rulers must look at the conditions of the people who, in spite of their poverty and pain, continue to live,” said Sheikh Abu Ala Al-Hassani, in a speech to protesters in Mosul.“Now, we have passed 50 days on strike, and we are still demanding ... that officials be held responsible.”The demonstrations were initially sparked in December by the arrest of several guards of Finance Minister Rafa Al-Essawi, a leading Sunni, and the longest-running of them have blocked off a key trade route linking Baghdad to Jordan and Syria. But they have since expanded markedly, and the government has sought to curtail them by claiming to have released thousands of detainees and raising the salaries of Sunni militiamen fighting Al-Qaeda extremists. It has also restricted movements in major cities on Fridays, when the largest of these protests are held.In Falluja and Ramadi, former insurgent strongholds, demonstrators blocked the main highway to Jordan and Syria to perform Friday noon prayers. Others gathered in main squares in the northern cities of Samarra, Mosul and Kirkuk. Local residents rallied outside a prominent Sunni mosque in the Baghdad.“Where is the partnership you are talking about? Sunnis are only seeing genocide and marginalization,” shouted cleric Saad Al-Fayadh in front of thousands of worshippers in Ramadi.— AFP/AP

Ex-generals testify in #Turkey coup probe

ANKARA — Several more retired Turkish generals, including former Air Forces Commander Gen. Ergin Celasin, were taken to the Ankara Courthouse Friday to give testimony as part of an investigation into the Feb. 28, 1997 post-modern coup, following the arrest of eight generals over the past two days in the same investigation.

The summoning of the generals, on top of dozens of other officers arrested, has widened the extensive judicial investigations into the once all-powerful military, whose clout has been sharply curtailed in the last decade. Those called to testify were identified as Vice Adm. Aydan Erol, former Air Forces Commander Gen. Ergin Celasin, Rear Adm. Mustafa ?zbey, Brig. Gen. ?zzettin Gürdal, Rear Adm. ?smail Ruhsar Sümer and Lt. Gen. Ahmet Atalay Efeer.

Gen. Ergin Celasin was promoted to the rank of general and appointed secretary general of the National Security Council in 1997. In 1999, he was appointed as the commander of the Turkish Air Forces, and he retired in August 2001.

On Thursday, seven other former senior members of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) were summoned to testify in the Feb. 28 probe, with four arrested late in the day and three conditionally released. A further four retired military generals were arrested late Wednesday and sent to jail pending trial while one other was released as part of the same probe. The five men had been taken to the Ankara Courthouse earlier the same day to testify on their suspected roles in the coup.

With Thursday’s arrests, the number of arrestees in the Feb. 28 coup probe over the past two days has risen to eight, while the total number of arrestees now stands at 68.

On Feb. 28, 1997, the Turkish military forced the coalition government led by the now-defunct conservative Welfare Party (RP) out of power citing alleged rising religious fundamentalism in the country. The Feb. 28 coup brought a series of severe restrictions on religious life, including an unofficial but widely practiced ban on the use of headscarves by women at university campuses and in positions of public service.

The military was also purged of members with suspected ties to religious groups and even officers who were simply observant Muslims. In addition, a number of newspapers were closed down after a National Security Council (MGK) decision called for closer monitoring of media outlets. — Agencies

#Palestinian rally for hunger striker turns violent

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM — Palestinian demonstrators clashed with Israeli soldiers Friday at a rally held in support of a prisoner observing an intermittent hunger strike to protest his incarceration.

The Israeli military said about 200 Palestinians threw rocks at soldiers who responded with tear gas during the rally outside Ofer prison in the West Bank. The protesters called for the release of Samer Issawi, who has been on an on-again, off-again hunger strike for several months as he serves time for alleged terror activity.

The prisoner issue is an emotional one for Palestinians after decades of conflict with Israel. Palestinians generally view them as heroes, regardless of the reason for their imprisonment — even when their crimes have involved killing civilians. Last year hundreds of Palestinian prisoners used hunger strikes to seek concessions from Israel.

Issawi, 35, was initially released in 2011 in a prisoner exchange. One Israeli soldier was freed from captivity in Gaza in exchange for more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, many of whom were convicted of being involved in suicide bombings and other deadly attacks.

Some prisoners, like Issawi, were released on condition of travel limits. Israeli Prison Service spokeswoman Sivan Weizman said he was arrested after he violated the terms of his release. She said he was arrested for “terror activity” and sentenced to 26 years, but released in the 2011 prisoner swap after serving only six years.

Issawi is under medical supervision and eats periodically, she said. Issawi’s sister, Shirin, said he has been on hunger strike for 206 days. She said he has only been drinking water since January. She said the prison takes her brother to an Israeli hospital for treatment.

Palestinian Minister of Prisoner Affairs Issa Qaraqe said Issawi began his fast in August and has been observing it intermittently.

Qaraqe said Issawi had lost 35 kg, has kidney pain and has lost feeling in parts of the right side of his body.

He said there are four prisoners on hunger strike.

Human rights groups have warned of their worsening health.

“If, God forbid, any prisoner dies of hunger strike inside the prison, the situation on the ground will deteriorate,” Qaraqe said. “People won’t stand for any prisoner to die of a hunger strike.”

Mideast envoy Tony Blair issued a statement expressing concern for the prisoner’s health. “This issue needs to be resolved quickly in order to avoid a tragic outcome which has the potential to destabilize the situation on the ground,” he said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas made an unannounced visit to a separate demonstration for prisoners near Ramallah. He said the prisoner issue would top his agenda in meetings with President Barack Obama, who is expected to visit the region next month. — AP
